The Evolving Dynamics Between Youth and Artificial Intelligence
The rise of artificial intelligence has ignited a complex interplay of excitement and apprehension among the youth. While AI offers unprecedented opportunities for innovation and efficiency, it also raises legitimate concerns about job displacement and the potential for misuse.
For first-time job seekers, the prospect of AI's increasing role in the workplace can be particularly daunting.
Fear of job redundancy is a common sentiment among other young professionals. As AI technologies become more sophisticated, they can automate tasks that were once performed by human workers.
The fear of becoming obsolete in a world increasingly dominated by AI-powered technologies is a pervasive anxiety among many young people. They worry that their skills may no longer be relevant in a future where machines can perform tasks once thought to be exclusively human. Moreover, the potential for AI to perpetuate biases and discrimination raises ethical concerns that weigh heavily on the minds of many young individuals.
While all of these apprehensions are valid, today’s youth have to understand that AI may be a revolutionary technology but it is also expected to improve their lives and the world around them. Already, AI is being applied in fields such as healthcare, education, and climate change. Youngsters can do well if they learn and develop skills related to AI, hoping to position themselves for success in the rapidly evolving job market. That will give them a fighting chance.
AI Set to Affect IT Jobs, But Should CIOs Be Worried?
Lower-level IT jobs are projected to face the most significant impact, with some potentially being replaced by AI. However, even senior roles aren't safe from these changes, leaving CIOs with reason to be concerned.
A recent report from the AI-Enabled ICT Workforce Consortium reveals that 92% of IT jobs will be significantly impacted by AI, with senior-level positions experiencing 100% transformation at a moderate level. In business and management IT roles, 63% are expected to undergo "high transformation" due to AI advancements.
A survey by Pluralsight of IT professionals in the US and UK found that 74% are concerned AI tools will render many of their daily skills obsolete. Tim Crawford, former CIO and current strategic advisor at AVOA, cautioned that CIOs who don’t embrace AI's changes risk being replaced. For those who do, AI will enhance their roles.
AI is poised to revolutionize decision-making at the highest levels. In a 2023 edX survey of 800 C-suite executives, over half believed their roles could be partially or fully replaced by AI, and 90% agreed at least some of their responsibilities could be automated. Nearly half anticipated that most or all of their job could be entirely taken over by AI.

AI's Coming For Coders? Uncertainty Looms, But Coders Aren't Out of Work Yet
While it's clear that AI is set to disrupt the coding profession, the extent of its impact remains uncertain. For now, AI isn’t expected to fully replace coders, as developers spend much of their time on tasks beyond writing code. According to GitLab, over 75% of a developer's time is spent on non-coding activities, and some veteran engineers estimate coding takes up only half of their workload—leaving plenty of work still to be done.
