AI: A Double-Edged Sword For IT
The IT industry stands at a crossroads, and how it navigates this transition will determine its success in the AI era.
The coming impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the information technology (IT) industry is fascinating. The impending AI revolution is set to reshape the IT landscape dramatically. A new report which I’ve to referred to later in this newsletter shows a staggering 92% of IT roles on the brink of transformation. While this may sound alarming, it's essential to view it as an opportunity rather than a threat. The demand for new skill sets like AI ethics, responsible AI, and LLM architecture indicates a shift towards higher-value, strategic roles. However, the challenge lies in upskilling the existing workforce to bridge the gap between current capabilities and future demands. The IT industry stands at a crossroads, and how it navigates this transition will determine its success in the AI era.

TCS CTO Highlights AI’s Role in Enhancing Workforce Productivity
In an interview with CNBC-TV18, Harrick Vin, Chief Technology Officer at Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), discussed the growing impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the workforce. Vin stressed that AI should be seen as a tool for augmentation rather than replacement, explaining, "AI will enable people to perform their tasks much better than they do today."
He highlighted that AI is set to boost productivity and allow employees to provide greater value to their customers. In call centers, for example, AI will transform customer interactions by automating tasks like summarizing call transcripts and analyzing sentiment. This will give agents better contextual awareness, enabling them to respond more efficiently and proactively anticipate customer needs, thereby shifting the focus from merely handling complaints to enhancing overall customer success.

AI to Transform 92% of IT Jobs, Says Inaugural Report from AI-Enabled ICT Workforce Consortium
To understand the impact of AI on the technology labor market, the newly formed AI-Enabled ICT Workforce Consortium has released its first report, titled “The Transformational Opportunity of AI on ICT Jobs.” The report reveals that 92% of IT jobs will undergo significant or moderate transformation due to AI advancements.
According to the study, mid-level (40%) and entry-level (37%) technology jobs will experience the most change as certain skills and capabilities shift in relevance. In this new landscape, AI ethics, responsible AI, rapid engineering, AI literacy, and large language model (LLM) architecture are expected to grow in importance. Meanwhile, traditional skills such as data management, content creation, documentation maintenance, basic programming, and research information are likely to become less relevant.

Lawmakers Slow to Address AI-Driven Job Losses Amid Rising Workforce Displacement Concerns
Despite growing concerns about AI-driven job displacement, lawmakers across the US have taken limited action to mitigate the impact on the workforce. According to this report, this year, Illinois and Tennessee passed laws protecting musicians and performers from unauthorized digital replicas, while a similar bill for fashion models in New York is awaiting approval from Governor Kathy Hochul.
However, broader measures like New York's proposed "robot tax" failed to gain traction, and bills in New Jersey aimed at promoting worker retraining and rehiring are still pending consideration.
While AI-related legislation has been plentiful—targeting issues like deepfake pornography, election misinformation, and discrimination in automated hiring decisions—addressing AI-induced job losses seems to be a lower priority and a more challenging issue to tackle politically.

EU Leads Global Efforts with Pioneering Artificial Intelligence Act to Address AI Risks
The European Union has taken a pioneering role in addressing the risks associated with artificial intelligence. Recently, the EU's Artificial Intelligence Act came into force, marking the first comprehensive law globally designed to manage AI risks. This legislation offers valuable lessons for Australia and other nations as they strive to ensure that AI is both safe and beneficial for all.
As governments worldwide wrestle with how to regulate this rapidly advancing technology, they face a dual challenge. On one hand, AI has the potential to boost national economies and streamline everyday tasks. On the other, it poses significant risks, including AI-enabled crime and fraud, the spread of misinformation, increased public surveillance, and the potential for further discrimination against already disadvantaged groups.

Is AGI Around The Corner?
Researchers are set to fast-track the development of artificial general intelligence (AGI) through a global network of powerful computers, starting with a new supercomputer coming online in September.
Unlike general AI (gen-AI), AGI is a theoretical system that would surpass human intelligence across various disciplines, capable of self-learning and improving its decision-making as it processes more data.
The supercomputers, designed by SingularityNET, will create a "multi-level cognitive computing network" to host and train the architectures necessary for AGI, according to company representatives.
