The burgeoning artificial intelligence (AI) industry has spawned a parallel epidemic: AI training course scams. Preying on the public's eagerness to capitalize on the AI boom, unscrupulous actors are peddling worthless certifications and empty promises. These scams not only drain financial resources but also erode trust in the AI education landscape. It's imperative for aspiring AI professionals to exercise caution, thoroughly research providers, and prioritize quality over quick fixes. Regulatory bodies and industry associations must also step up to protect consumers and maintain the integrity of AI education.

AI Analyzing AI: A Perilous Precedent?

UK’s Tony Blair Institute's reliance on ChatGPT to analyze the findings of a study on AI's impact on public sector jobs (news report further down this newsletter) raises profound ethical questions. While AI can be a powerful tool for data analysis, using it as the primary architect of a research paper, especially one focused on AI itself, is fraught with risks.

Such an approach bypasses human judgment and expertise, potentially leading to biased, inaccurate, or incomplete findings. The credibility of research hinges on transparency and accountability, which are compromised when AI takes the lead. As we navigate the AI revolution, it's imperative to establish clear guidelines for AI's role in research, ensuring it remains a tool augmenting human intelligence, not replacing it. One also needs to be careful of asking gen-AI to analyze research about AI.

At the same time, gen-AI should not be entirely dismissed in research. It offers immense potential to accelerate data analysis, identify patterns, and generate hypotheses. However, the case of the TBI underscores the critical need for human oversight and judgment.

In such cases, not only should there be a “human in the loop”, but in the interest of transparency, consumers of the report should be made aware of the use of AI upfront. At the same time, researchers and research companies must establish clear ethical frameworks for the use of AI in research.

AI Contributing To Recent Job Cuts in Tech Sector

Demand for AI Skills Soars, Boosting Worker Salaries

Workers across industries are increasingly seeking artificial intelligence skills as their necessity and value skyrocket. According to a recent report from recruiting software company “Ringover”, AI-skilled workers can earn nearly $25,000 more annually. Many are gaining these skills through AI certifications rather than traditional education. For instance, Coursera’s free courses "AI For Everyone" and "Generative AI for Everyone," offered by DeepLearning.AI, are popular among beginners and take just 5-6 hours to complete, much shorter than a college semester.

On the other hand, the AI boom is also leading to certification scams, the report claimed.

“Intuit” to Invest in AI While Cutting 10% of Workforce

Software company “Intuit” is investing in the future by focusing on AI, but 10% of its staff won't be coming along for the ride. The financial software maker is the latest in a long string of tech companies to announce layoffs. However, CEO Sasan Goodarzi clarified that the 1,800 employees being let go will be quickly replaced by new hires focusing on critical areas, including AI.

Sasan also indicated that Intuit's overall headcount would likely grow over the next year.

"We do not do layoffs to cut costs, and that remains true in this case," he wrote in a memo titled "Investing in the Future," shared on the Intuit blog.
