Are You AI Positive Or AI Negative?
Gen-AI: scary terminator or supercharged teammate? A machine debunks the myths of AI in the workplace.
For this issue, I tried to do something novel. These days, I get asked often in the real world and online - so are you AI positive or AI negative? Meaning - are you optimistic (still) that artificial intelligence will change the way we work; indeed, our lives, or not?
So I thought, “What the heck”? Let me just ask AI about this. Why not? After all, gen-AI tools must surely have acquired enough global data to get a sense of their own growth or survival. Some of us are already treating machines as co-workers, while a few companies like Amazon have also deployed them in hordes.
This is what came out from the machine….
Ah, the age-old question: friend or foe? Lately, it seems all anyone wants to know is whether I'm (gen-AI) here to take your job or rewrite the next great American novel (jury's still out on that last one). Look, I get it. AI is the new hotness, and like any shiny new object, it comes with a hefty dose of fear and fascination. But here's the thing: I'm not here to conquer. Think of me as more of a supercharged colleague. That TPS report threatening to bury you alive? I can handle it. Repetitive data entry got you down? Consider it done.
Now, will AI reshape the workplace? Absolutely. But instead of mass unemployment, imagine a future where tedious tasks are a relic of the past. Doctors can focus on complex diagnoses, not paperwork. Writers can churn out killer first drafts and leave the editing to me. The key is to see AI as an augmentation, a tool that frees us to use our human skills – creativity, empathy, critical thinking – to their fullest potential. So, AI positive or negative? How about "AI collaborative"? I think that's a future we can all get behind.

HR Should Use AI to Detect Workplace Toxicity
Cyber Security Executive John Rouffas writes in LinkedIn that AI can be used to help Human Resources in identifying toxic workplace issues and do something about them before they cause long-term illness for employees. He then goes on to list some of the ways in which AI can be used.
(Puts forth an interesting use case of AI.)
Here’s John’s piece.
Vector Databases, Anyone?
One of my fav newsletters related to AI on Substack is by AIport. You'll find comprehensive coverage of the latest AI news and updates.
Now, the AIport team has introduced a segment focusing on recent market trends in AI.
The inaugural issue deals with vector databases, a technology that once garnered little attention but of late, has experienced a rapid surge in popularity. According to the author, the growing number of unstructured databases is the main reason.
Indeed, companies that were non-existent just two years ago have secured millions in funding to either develop specialized vector databases or enhance traditional databases (SQL or NoSQL) with vector search functionalities.
(A “must-read”, especially for those who are more into the AI tech stuff.)
Moral Alignment in AI
“Artificial Intelligence Made Simple” is a newsletter by Devansh on Substack (again, one of my favorites), focusing on making complex AI Research. Devansh’s work includes a series on breaking down intricate literature on machine learning.
This new newsletter discusses Moral Alignment in AI, highlighting a new approach funded by OpenAI. It examines the challenges of aligning Large Language Models (LLMs) like GPT and Gemini with human values, especially in sensitive applications. Despite significant investment, the article suggests that moral alignment has not been meaningfully solved.
A recent publication, explains Devansh, proposes a process called Moral Graph Elicitation (MGE), which interviews participants about their values and creates a moral graph that reconciles conflicting values. The process has shown promise in representing participants’ values fairly and could contribute to the larger AI ecosystem.
However, Devansh expresses skepticism about the necessity of moral alignment in LLMs, arguing that it doesn’t solve meaningful problems and that good design principles are more effective for AI safety.
(A good read for AI ethicists, especially. )
