Netflix Seeks Product Manager to Expand AI Use Amid Industry Disputes and Job Concerns
Netflix sure got the timing wrong.
The OTT platform is seeking to hire a product manager to bolster the internal use of AI. But the move comes amid ongoing disputes between the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) concerning the implementation of machine learning in film and TV productions, leading to concerns about potential job implications for journalists.
The job listing offers an impressive salary range of $300,000 to $900,000. The successful applicant will have the responsibility of developing a strategic vision for Netflix's utilization of AI through its machine learning platform. This platform is designed to empower ML/AI practitioners within Netflix to achieve maximum impact with their work by facilitating the development, deployment, and improvement of their ML models.

This product manager role is not the only AI-related job opportunity advertised by Netflix. The company is also looking for a machine learning scientist to work on localization algorithms, an engineering manager to lead AI research on customer satisfaction, and a software engineer to develop tools for those using machine learning.
These job listings demonstrate Netflix's commitment to investing further in AI, raising concerns among striking SAG-AFTRA and WGA members who fear potential exploitation or job replacement by AI technology.

Fears of AI Impact on Jobs Continue, but HSBC Report Identifies Other Job Displacement Factors
Since the viral rise of ChatGPT last November, concerns about AI-powered technologies taking over human jobs have only grown. The popularity of AI has shed light on its capabilities and potential impact on careers, sparking debates about its effects on the workforce.
While experts acknowledge that AI will undoubtedly impact jobs and automate certain tasks, they also emphasize that technological advancements often create new job opportunities.
However, the extent of workers' concerns remains uncertain. A recent HSBC report suggests that technological developments like AI might not be the primary factor behind future job losses. Instead, the report draws on data from the World Economic Forum's "Report on Jobs 2023" to highlight four macroeconomic trends expected to drive job displacement.
The most common factor identified by companies for potential job loss is slower economic growth. The World Bank recently projected a slower global economic growth rate of 2.1% for 2023, compared to 3.1% last year.
HSBC analysts stated in the report, "The challenges are clear – weaker economic growth and general shortages in supply or demand mean that many firms expect to operate with fewer workers."
Despite the challenges, the report points out that not all changes in the economy will result in fewer jobs. Companies anticipate that factors like the green transition and the adoption of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards will lead to the creation of more jobs.

Experts Raise Complex Questions on AI Integration in Daily Workflows: Impact on Jobs and Wages
As AI becomes increasingly integrated into daily workflows, employees are contemplating the AI skills they need to secure their jobs in companies embracing this technology.
This interesting article on bbc.com take a deeper look at AI skills required, and the overall job scenario. It says while AI may automate some routine tasks, experts emphasize that it won't completely replace human workers. Instead, employees are expected to collaborate with machines, and their roles may evolve to focus on more sophisticated tasks as AI handles repetitive and manual work. This shift ideally allows employees to engage in uniquely human activities such as creative problem-solving and interpersonal communication, leading to increased productivity and better output.
The assumption is that as job descriptions change and workers contribute more due to AI's benefits, wages will naturally follow suit. However, experts caution that the outlook for workers at all skill levels may be more complex.
With AI taking over mundane tasks, especially in knowledge-based roles, many jobs are expected to become more sophisticated and creative. As workers delegate time-consuming minutiae to machines, productivity is likely to rise, leading to an increase in output at a higher level. This shift changes the fundamental nature of some job descriptions.
While some companies may raise pay as employees take on new tasks, there is skepticism among experts, including MIT economics professor Daron Acemoglu, that all workers will see pay increases as AI drives them to undertake different and more demanding work.
