Think Open-Source AI is Fully Accessible? Think Again

Certain systems do not give users full access to all the critical components.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has evolved quickly, with large language models (LLMs) becoming a powerful tool. Trained on vast datasets, these models can produce text that reads like human writing, translate languages, create diverse content, and provide informative answers.

Historically, major tech companies developed these models and kept them proprietary. Now, however, a new trend of open-source LLMs is disrupting this approach. The twist is that, while open-source AI aims for transparency and accessibility, the level of access users have to all components can still vary. You may not get access to all the crucial components.

Listen to this podcast to understand why not all so-called “open-source” AI systems are truly that.

"Living With AI" articles are aimed at everyday readers who are curious about AI, not experts in the field. We strive for accuracy, but sometimes we simplify concepts or skip over the more technical aspects. It’s a bit like explaining rocket science using a baking soda volcano—fun and engaging, but not exactly the full picture! If you're looking for more in-depth information, plenty of resources are available for you to explore.
